In our most recent blog post, we talked about the pros and cons of working for a large financial services firm, rather than risking the chance you’ll fall flat on your face if you break out on your own.
Considering the pros and cons of being an employee, rather than an employer, is a good start when determining whether you want to stay where you are or be your own boss.
So, if you’re not sure if you have the makings of an entrepreneur, it might help to think about whether you possess any of the following qualities:
Ambition
Ambition is key to entrepreneurship.
Staying where you are is always easier than jumping into the unknown. It takes a certain amount of drive to leave certainty behind and bet on yourself.
So, if you’re not satisfied with the status quo, and you can’t shake the feeling that you were made for more, you might have what it takes to be an entrepreneur.
A Tolerance for Risk
You don’t have to enjoy taking risks, but there’s no denying that entrepreneurship is risky.
At the very least, you need to have a tolerance for a certain amount of risk, so you can leave the known in favor of the unknown without freaking out.
You Don’t Mind Working 80-Hour Weeks
Entrepreneurs are the only people who are willing to trade a 9-5 schedule for a 7am-9pm schedule.
Being your own boss, especially in the early days when you’re in the process of building your business, means you have to do all the things: bringing in new clients, billing, serving those clients, paying your bills, etc.
It means working early in the morning, late at night, and on weekends. So, if you’re not ready and willing to work long hours, you’re better off sticking with an employer who will do the lion’s share of the business development for you so you can focus on working with your clients.
